The Path

We saw men high in the air building a cell tower several weeks ago as we drove through town. Jacob was enthralled and so followed a discussion about building and towers and men building towers and hard hats and all the questions a four year old has about those things.

For some reason today when we were in the car, Jacob started asking about the men building the tower again. He wanted to know if God made the tower. "No," I said, "God made the men who built the tower." Jacob digested this a moment and then asked the million dollar question, "What did God make me to do?"

Well, precious boy, I don't know. But with God's help and the Holy Spirit's leading, I hope and pray that Tony and I can help direct you towards what it is God made you to do. This may be the hardest of jobs given to parents. We want to help our kids find what God has for them without somehow pushing them to what we want for them. We don't want to dress our kids in a suit of expectation that is not only an ill fit, but also the completely wrong outfit for their divine calling.

Even now, young as they are, interests and desires are forming. Dreams are beginning to weave themselves of delicate cobwebs, glistening drops of dew on their innocent beginnings. A love of baseball may not be a major league calling- as amazing as that might be for our family- but rather, a coach or mentor or just a dad one day teaching his own son the game and all the other lessons to be learned from it. A love of school may not be a teacher one day, but a calling to be wife, homemaker and caretaker of the blossoming minds of her own precious children.

With so many options available, so many paths to take, how grateful I am that God has given us a guide to follow, the Bible. Now is the time to begin praying for and seeking discernment and wisdom for our children and for us so that as they take their tentative steps forward we can help them find what God made them to do.

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. Ps 119:105
