Ad Valorem

Those days where the kids misbehave, the house is a mess, supper burned on the stove, the baby is teething and everything seems to go wrong. Those days when we snap at our kids, don't do the laundry just because we don't want to, order pizza for supper, put the baby in the bed and toss in a few toys and hide in our room with a candy bar and a box of kleenex. We feel ugly, and fat, mean and angry and hate the person we are.

I know we sing the song for the kids, but do we really internalize that we too, the moms and wives of the world are precious in His sight too?

Turning from front to back and side to side in the fitting room mirror, checking every angle, and never buying a single new thing because you still need to lose a few pounds. Fat, thin, or somewhere in the middle, all we see are the flaws, but what He sees is a wonderful work, a lovely woman that is fearfully and wonderfully made.

Raising our children, never leaving our home for days, craving adult conversation, putting our social life on hold as we pour our life into our kids. Some days we feel that we've been forgotten, lost in the busy schedules of our kids, buried under the mounds of laundry we cycle through each week. But with gentle humor, our Heavenly Father tells us, "Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? And [yet] not one of them is forgotten or uncared for in the presence of God. But [even] the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Do not be struck with fear or seized with alarm; you are of greater worth than many [flocks] of sparrows. (Luke 12:6-7). He sees you, He hears you, you are so precious to Him.

We place so much value in how we look, what we are wearing, who our friends are, how our children behave that when we don't look good, don't have new clothes, are not faring well on the friend front, and the kids are a wreck, all we can do is despair and cry. But that is not how it should be, our value - a price far above the most costly and rare rubies, pearls and jewels of ancient kings- is not found in those things. Our value is found in Christ alone.

Long ago when God formed the earth, made light and dark, fashioned a fabulous world, He already knew you. Who you would be, your height, the color of your eyes, the exact tint of your skin. He already planned the sense of humor he would give you, how you would love to cook or garden or read or paint. How you would be afraid of heights, but unshaken by the sight of blood. In precise detail, He planned you. Not only that, but He planned for you. He formed you the perfect mate to marry, the family to grow you in and give you later, He put so much thought into the path of your life, each individual step.

A God who cares that much, must think you are pretty special. Because you are.

  1. That's exactly what I needed to hear today. It's so easy to be caught up in the negatives, the messiness, the loneliness, etc etc, and it's so easy to focus on what we DON'T like about ourselves, and think how could God possibly love me like this? Thanks for the reminder.
