Several years ago I caused a dear friend of mine a lot of hurt. I was a lot younger, and stupid and I acted foolishly. This friend was someone who I admired, who I respected, who I cared for a great deal. In spite of her hurt, my friend extended forgiveness to me very graciously and sweetly.
Even now, years later, I cannot think of the situation without waves of regret, pangs of remorse and a wishful thought to go back and undo it all. Of course, I can't, but oh how I wish I could.
I made my tearful apologies, in fact, I could not say it enough. I could not have been more contrite, I could not have cried more tears. Regret is a hard thing to live with.
Today, it hit me. Jesus paid it all. As sorry as a person can be, it can never fully pay the price tag on the deed. As hard as a person might try, they can never do enough. They can never be enough. Only Jesus can fully satisfy the high price of sin. Only He can blot our sin, mark the tag paid in full and leave both sides feeling as though the transaction is complete.
How many of us are still clinging to a debt that has already been paid by our Father? Once the precious Blood was spilled, our sins became only baggage that we can choose to carry or that we can choose to pack away, a page in a chapter of our life, but not the whole story.
Let go of the burden of sins in the past that are forgiven and forgotten. Though the price was high, the cost dear, it's paid in full if you know the One who owns the cattle on a thousand hills. Like a giddy caller on Dave Ramsey's radio show, we should shout with gleeful abandon, "I'm debt free!"
