The Annoying Day

We've had rain these last few days. A day or two, I can deal with. By day three, I am glum. Irritable. Grouchy. Who knew that weather could have such an impact on attitude. Or it could be that the weather impacts when, where and how my kids get out their wiggles and that impacts my mood.

Today was an annoying day.

I spent the morning playing referee, being forced to yell at my kids so that they could hear me over their yelling. Jacob was a master pest today, picking at, poking and prodding Kaylen until she screamed. My memories of this morning are all one big scream. Me and Kaylen both.

Normally I grocery shop on Mondays, but it was raining. So I was going to go Tuesday. But it was raining. By today we were getting desperate, so out we went. I'm mad at my grocery store right now, by the way, because they mail out coupons to everyone I know but refuse to give them to me. I've called twice and emailed once. This isn't over. But I digress. So, we were shopping and Wednesday must be senior citizen discount day because they were all there at the same time we were. Don't get me wrong, I love old people. My grandparents are old people and I adore them, but there are times when enough is enough. I had my cart full of crazies and we were trying to get around this tiny old lady who was looking over the bread. We waited and waited, and finally Jacob took matter into his own hands and said, "Beep, beep!" Well, it worked. But I was mortified.

As I was leaving the store, all at the same time, a can of beans rolled out of a bag and onto the ground, my cell phone started ringing and Jacob slipped off the buggy and fell on the ground.

When we got home, I ordered our resident pack rat to stay in the car and pick up all her "pizas" (that would be princesses) along with all their furniture that she had brought along for the ride to the grocery store. And dumped all over the car for the three miles we were in the car. Well, when I went out to check on her, she hadn't picked up a single doll, but she had pooped in her pants. That tops my list of most annoying moments of the day.

A little while later I decided to make cupcakes for our nephew who turned 18 today. They were his favorite and I promised them to him. The recipe called for three eggs. Can someone explain to me how not once, but twice I cracked an egg and it fell out on the outside of the bowl rather than the inside? I mean, I had to get a spoon and scoop up egg from the counter. Really.

What an annoying day.

But then, we went to church. Our annual vision night service. Tonight I met the hoped for, prayed for sweet baby from China. A darling daughter adopted into a loving family, one less broken heart tonight. I felt the excitement of the first expansion campus that our church is launching in March. I worshiped my holy and righteous God along with a body of believers and felt the sweet sense of fellowship. It's hard to feel annoyed when you are redeemed.

Leaving tonight, I could see the curving crescent moon, a smile from heaven. The rain clouds cleared out while we were in church and my head felt clearer too. Days like today happen and it's annoying, but when you serve the Lord, spending time with Him and His people is like the first sunny day after a week of rain.
